Windows 7 (RTM 7.600) Add new hardware device search takes very long in VMWare.

Hello,

I have a driver, it's supposed to be ready to be installed by Windows 7
decides to be a smartass and starts searching for new hardware.

I didn't tell it to search for new hardware... but it just guess ahead and
starts searching... ?!

It's taking FOREVER !

No way around it ?

I tried clicking "what if it doesn't find..blabla help" <- nada.

I tried cancelling but that doesn't skip/bypass it so have to start over
again.

I tried installing via the inf (that came with netvmini from WDK7) that also
doesn't work AS USUAL !.

THIS SUX.

Perhaps if you gave pertinent and actual details. You are staying extremely
general. In fact - the only real specific detail you have given is that you
supposedly are using the released to manufacturing version of Windows 7.
One could infer later this is a network driver?

So, please, come back and post the device details this driver is supposedly
for, at least. The more details you give, the more likely someone could
help you.

Irrelevant.

Ignore the fact that I am running VMware for a moment.

I simply click "add device" in Windows 7 (x64 ULTIMATE)

Windows 7 starts searching and it never stops searching.

Result: I cannot add the driver manually.

Irrelevant what driver it actually is at this point.

I already waited 16 minutes... and it's still searching... after a fresh
reboot of all systems.

Now back to VMware... it might be a VMware issue... (VMWare Workstation
6.5.1)

However it might also be a real Windows 7 issue.

If it's the latter then WOW does Windows 7 have big problems !
(Without decent hardware/driver support people might as well throw it in the
waste basket ! =D ;) :))

However the driver I am trying to install is not for an existing device...
it's for a non-existing device, a virtual device.

This virtual device doesn't even exist in VMware... it will only exist in
Windows 7 itself.

There are plenty of examples/drivers that are "virtual/non-existent".

(Examples: virtual cd-roms, virtual dvd-roms, loopback interface, virtual
network adapters, etc).

This is utterly a big design mistake... why search if I as a user know
exactly where the driver is ?

I am not stupid you know ;)

This "dumbing down" of windows has gone way too far it now seems !

Is it to much to ask for to have an option to supply the location of the
driver manually as to prevent a long search ?

Ok,

Apperently I am not the only one noticing this problem.

This guy found a solution:

Apperently there is a "add legacy hardware" option which has the old dialog
"system".

Where I can specify the driver location manually.

It's done by right clicking on "computer", clicking "manage" from menu.

Clicking device manager, clicking network adapters as an example.

Then click action.

Then if everything went well it would display:

"Add legacy hardware".

However "network adapters" or so other item need to be selected otherwise
this will never display.

So even this is shaky... but so far some dialogs popped up.

I shall now attempt to install the mtf driver ;) :)
